PERIODONTAL THERAPY

WHAT IS PERIODONTAL THERAPY?

Periodontal therapy is the treatment of periodontal diseases. Periodontal diseases are chronic bacterial infections that slowly attack and destroy the gums and supporting bone that hold your teeth in place. They begin slowly and can be reversed in the early stages. This is why it is important to schedule regular dental appointments to detect any potential issues before they advance.

However, once the disease reaches its advanced stage, the affected teeth will most likely need to be extracted. We will work with together to set out the best treatment options for you.

Read below to see the various stages of periodontal disease.

EARLY STAGE

In the first stage of the disease (gingivitis) plaque settles along the gum line of the teeth and causes the gums to swell. The gums become red in appearance, and bleed. This is often the result of inadequate oral hygiene. Gingivitis is reversible with regular dental visits and proper oral hygiene.

If the plaque is not removed, bacteria settles around the roots of the teeth and starts to destroy the supporting bone. This bone loss is not reversible. The gum then becomes infected and pulls away from the teeth, forming pockets.

As the pockets become deeper and the infection spreads, more bacteria accumulates and further bone loss occurs. The gums shrink away and teeth become loose and may shift. Many people suffer bad breath at this stage.

ADVANCED STAGE

Once periodontal disease reaches its advanced stage, painful abscesses can form in the gum. There is little bone support left and the teeth are loose and in most cases, teeth at this stage require extraction.
